A world first: Silvershield® lamination film for microbe-free documentsIf you need to maintain a hygienic environment for yourself and your customers or clients, then laminating your printed materials with Silvershield® film greatly reduces unwelcome bacteria, moulds, mildews and fungi. That's because Silvershield® has antimicrobial protection built into its very structure, rather than just its surface.
This new product (patent pending), from a leading U.S. manufacturer, really is special - it helps prevent the spread of disease-causing bacteria and destructive moulds, mildews and fungi, protecting not only your documents but the people handling them. It's a world first!
The benefits of Silvershield® are obviousItems laminated by Silvershield® film are:
- Microbe free, and continue to remain so 24/7, reducing any cross-infections. It's just safer. Typically, printed materials are frequently handled by many people, perpetuating the surface growth of bacteria, mould and mildew. Some items, like restaurant menus, photographs, plans, book covers, anatomical charts, counter mats, classroom materials, manuals, instruction or reference sheets, are used in environments where unwelcome microorganisms and cross-infections are all too common. Silvershield® film gives superb microbial protection for these.
- An excellent point of difference between your products and those of your competitors. You can now offer improved safety.
Who can benefitSilvershield® will benefit all those in schools, universities, daycare facilities, hospitals and clinics, nursing homes, veterinary facilities, dental offices, restaurants and food service environments, and retailers... to name just a few.
How Silvershield® works
Bacteria and other damaging microbes are everywhere. A single infectious bacterium can reproduce a million times in just one hour. Some can survive on documents for months. It makes sense to limit our exposure to them. At the heart of Silvershield® is the element silver, a natural antimicrobial agent especially effective against the broadest range of microbes. As an antimicrobial silver kills or inhibits the growth and reproduction of bacteria, moulds and fungi. Historically it has been used in some medical applications and as protection against food and water spoilage. Silvershield® film has a surface on which microbes simply cannot survive because their lifecycle is interrupted and their reproductive capabilities are severely affected.
Silver, the antimicrobial agent, is released at the surface by surface moisture. It kills bacteria and inhibits their growth.

The silver is held in a special matrix, called a zeolite, where it migrates in and out of, depending on the conditions,

The value of Silvershield® is compellingSilvershield® film is a premium, yet very cost-effective, product. For example, laminating a typical menu with Silvershield® film would cost as little as 15 cents extra per unit. For most applications it's about 8% above the standard laminating film cost - a small price for the protection it gives.
Silvershield® is safe
- Studies have shown the antimicrobial agent in Silvershield® is less toxic than table salt.
- The EPA has registered the antimicrobial agent for use around food and water, as well as other uses.
- The FDA lists the antimicrobial agent in its food contact substance notification in 21-CFR.
- The USDA lists the antimicrobial agent as safe for food processing plants.
Silvershield® is stable and durable
- The Silvershield antimicrobial protection is not affected by cleaning or use.
- The antimicrobial protection is long-lasting. Under normal conditions, the laminated piece will wear out or become outdated long before the antimicrobial agent becomes ineffective.
